Plastic Surgery Rates Increasing Among Older Americans

|

oldercouple.jpgPlastic surgery is becoming more popular among many age groups, and we're seeing a lot of older patients coming into our office, looking for plastic surgery. Whether seeking eyelid surgery, facial surgery, or something else, many patients tell us they want to look on the outside how they feel on the inside - which is youthful and energetic.

As people live longer, it's no surprise older Americans are seeking plastic surgery. Some folks have more financial freedom in their later years, making plastic surgery more financially feasible. For others, retirement is the perfect time for a procedure because work obligations no longer interfere.

A recent news report on WISH-TV confirms what we're seeing in our office too. Click here if you'd like to see the story.

If you are wondering if you're a good candidate for a plastic surgery procedure, we offer complementary consultations for cosmetic surgery. Just contact us online or call us at 912-31-5050 and we'll be happy to set up an appointment.

Protect Yourself from Counterfeit Fillers

|

iStock-627196908.jpgYou've decided you're ready to try a wrinkle relaxer like Botox & Dysport, or a dermal filler like Juvederm, Radiesse, or Restylane. Your next step is choosing a doctor - but did you know, you also need to make sure the product you're receiving is legit?

Unfortunately, we're hearing stories about counterfeit injectables being sold and used in the United States. These imitation products can be a safety concern for patients - not to mention an ethical issue if your doctor is marketing them as the real deal. At Savannah Plastic Surgery, we only sell brand-name fillers, and what we advertise is what you get.

Allure magazine recently published an article with 5 tips for protecting yourself from counterfeit fillers. Click here to read the full article; we paraphrase the 5 tips here:

1. Be sure your treatment is done by a board-certified professional.

We've said it before but we'll say it again - board-certification is important! Physicians must gain specialized skills and knowledge to receive board certification, and misconduct can result in a loss of certification. If your doctor is board-certified, that's a good sign that he or she takes the job - and your health - very seriously.

2. Ask to see the product box - you can ask your physician to show you the box your injectable comes in.

3. Be wary of super low pricing.

We do offer discounts on fillers from time to time, but if you see a price somewhere that's too good to be true, that could be a red flag that the product may not be authentic.

4. Pay attention to any side effects.

You should always talk to your doctor about any possible side effects before receiving injectables. If there is unusual pain during treatment, or persistent redness and swelling after treatment, you may need to investigate the authenticity of the treatment you received. Any medical emergencies should be treated right away.

5. Ask for help.

If you're concerned that your side effects are abnormal, you should talk with the medical professional who treated you. If his or her answers are unsatisfactory, it may be time to get help from another doctor.

Thread Lift Vs. Face Lift

|

chin and face copy.jpgYou may have heard of a procedure gaining popularity as a non-surgical alternative to the face lift - it's called a "thread lift." In a thread lift, threads are sewn into a patient's facial skin, and then pulled to tighten the skin for a lifted, younger appearance. Patients are under local anesthetic, and downtime is minimal.

It sounds like a good plan at first, but the threads dissolve and results usually only last 6 months. So 180 days after your procedure, you're back to where you were before, and out of pocket a significant amount of money.

That's one reason we don't perform thread lifts at Savannah Plastic Surgery - we want you to be happy with your results in the long term. A face lift is cosmetic surgery, and patients are put under general anesthesia and need around 2 weeks to recover. But the results are long lasting. No one can completely stop time - your face will continue to age and you may want to repeat the procedure one or more times-perhaps five or ten years down the line. But in another sense, the effects of even one face lift are lasting; years later, you'll continue to look better than if you'd never had a face lift at all.

You can read more about the thread lift vs face lift debate here: https://www.allure.com/story/thread-lift-plastic-surgery-procedure

If you are looking for facial rejuvenation but aren't ready for a full face lift, you may also consider the FreshLook Lift. The FreshLook Lift is a less invasive facelift performed by our plastic surgeons as an outpatient with local anesthesia and mild sedation. This allows the patient to return home and resume daily activities sooner. The "down time" is reduced to a few days.

Or, if you just need a "quick fix," fillers and injectables like Botox, Dysport, Restylane and Juvederm are also viable alternatives to surgery.

If you have questions about which facial rejuvenation procedure is right for you, we'd love to bring you into the office for a consultation with one of our surgeons. Contact us today!

Younger Clients Use Botox for Wrinkle Prevention

|

Botox has long been used to treat wrinkles, but increasingly Botox is used for prevention too. It's not your mother's remedy anymore - we're seeing an increase in younger patients requesting Botox to stop wrinkles before they form.

During our growing years, collagen production makes our skin thicken. But once we enter our 20s, that process stops. Eventually, as your skin begins to lose thickness, wrinkles form and deepen.

wrinkles-600.jpgBotox injections relax those muscles where wrinkles occur, and help to smooth out the lines. And if you begin Botox injections before your wrinkles are prominent, it's possible you can prevent deeper wrinkles from forming. That's good news for millennials looking to slow the affects of aging on their skin, and to avoid or delay a more invasive procedure like a face lift.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a majority of Botox users are 40-54 years old. But the number of younger Botox patients is on the rise, and people in their 20s accounted for 18% of Botox treatments in 2015 in the U.S. Overall, the number of Botox injections increased by 4% from 2015-2016, with more than 7 million injections given last year.

Some people use Botox by itself for wrinkle prevention; others will use Botox in conjunction with other minimally invasive skin treatments.

Preventive Botox

|
Botox-blog.jpg
Botox has long been touted as a way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but did you know it can also keep wrinkles from ever forming in the first place?

That's why we've begun to see younger people coming in for Botox and Dysport treatments, before their wrinkles are pronounced. It's called preventive Botox, and is used to keep the wrinkles from happening, rather than trying to reverse them after the fact.

Botox is only one tool in your toolbox for maintaining youthful skin. Wearing high-quality sunscreen and a daily skin cleaning regimen are also key. But if you notice the beginning of frown lines and creases, Botox may help them disappear before they can form deep, lasting wrinkles.

Get in touch if you'd like to learn more about Botox and Dysport, and whether or not they're right for you.

Dermal Filler for Your Hands

|
As we grow older, our hands often give away our age. They lose firmness and volume, leaving the bones and tendons more visible.

The US Food and Drug Administration has now approved use of the dermal filler Radiesse for hands. Radiesse has long been used as a dermal filler in faces, filling in wrinkles and plumping any areas that have become hollow. The same technique can be applied to the hands as well, adding volume and reducing the bony look, giving you more youthful hands.

This photograph is of one of our patients who used Radiesse to restore lost volume in her hands.

FreshLook Lift™ vs. Face Lift

|
The FreshLook Lift™ is one of our most popular procedures right now, and it's not hard to see why. For decades, people have relied on the surgical face lift procedure to turn back the clock and take years off their appearance. But now, the FreshLook Lift™ is making it even easier, and more affordable than ever, to reclaim your youthful face.

Here are a few of the questions we often get from patients considering a facelift or the FreshLook Lift™.

1. What is the difference between the FreshLook Lift™ and a facelift? How do I know which one is right for me?

The biggest differences between a facelift and the FreshLook Lift™ are the recovery time and the level of sedation. The FreshLook Lift™ takes half the time of a facelift at half the cost, and still gives you great results. The procedure time is from 2-4 hours, and then you're sent home with a facial garment instead of the drains you need with a traditional facelift.

2. Will I be asleep during the procedure?

The FreshLook Lift™ does not require IV sedation. Instead you're given an "oral cocktail" of medications before surgery to help you relax during the procedure.

3. How much recovery time is needed?

With a FreshLook Lift™, you are able to resume most of your normal activities in two or three days, although some patients may take a little longer to recover. You will need to wear a facial garment during recovery. Your specific post-operative care and recovery experience will depend on your lifestyle and what your surgeon recommends.

4. How long will the results last?

The FreshLook Lift™ will take years off your appearance, but as with any other procedure, the aging process does not end. However, with appropriate skin care and a good diet and exercise routine, the results should last for several years.

5. Does the FreshLook Lift™ help remove wrinkles?

The FreshLook Lift™ gives the skin a more youthful, smoother look, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will look better than ever, and if you care for your skin with a good skin care protocol, you will look and feel fabulous for years to come!
