Like the procedure itself, recovery after a mommy makeover varies depending on the treatment areas and the surgical techniques involved. How long does it take? To recover from a mommy makeover fully, most patients need can expect an initial healing phase of a couple of weeks and then several months of minor changes as the tissue heals and settles, the incision lines mature, and the residual swelling dissipates.
This blog post aims to provide some insight into what to expect after a mommy makeover and empower you to make informed decisions about your procedure. Find answers to common mommy makeover questions below!
What Does a Mommy Makeover Consist of?
Physical changes associated with having children focus primarily on the breasts and abdomen, so a mommy makeover typically includes breast enhancement and body contouring procedures. The breasts will also enlarge during pregnancy and breastfeeding, increasing as much as a full cup size or more. However, returning back to 'normal' can mean a significant loss in breast volume and noticeable sagging.
Similarly, the abdominal muscles, skin and tissues stretch throughout pregnancy to safely accommodate the growing baby. Unfortunately, these layers may not return to their taut, pre-baby shape after childbirth, especially if your 'six-pack' muscles have separated (a common post-pregnancy condition called diastasis recti).
The most common procedures performed during mommy makeover surgery include:
- Tummy tuck
- Liposuction
- Breast lift (with or without implants)
How Long Is Recovery After a Mommy Makeover?
As we mentioned at the outset, the recovery time depends on the specific procedures performed. In most cases, recovering from tummy tuck surgery requires the most time. Even though a mommy makeover combines procedures, it won't necessarily take longer to recover. The initial phase of your recovery takes about 2 weeks, but residual swelling can last much longer.
How Painful Is Recovery From a Mommy Makeover?
Discomfort and pain are normal, especially during the first week after surgery. The intensity of the pain varies and also depends on your pain threshold. Some patients manage their discomfort with over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen. Prescription pain medication can be used at your own discretion. If you feel like you don't need pain relief, you can skip it.
How Long After a Mommy Makeover Can I Drive?
There are a couple of initial roadblocks to getting behind the wheel after a mommy makeover. First, you have to be off prescription pain medication before you can drive. Second, if a tummy tuck is part of the procedure, you'll need to walk slightly hunched over for about a week. Finally, you'll need to be careful to avoid straining your incision when putting on a seatbelt. Most mommy makeover patients can resume driving in 10 to 14 days.
How Long After a Mommy Makeover Can I Work Out?
Many of the women who get mommy makeover surgery at our practice find not being able to go to the gym one of the most challenging parts of recovery. It's essential, however, to closely follow your plastic surgeon's instructions about exercising. In general, you should expect it to be 4 to 6 weeks before resuming strenuous workouts, though you are encouraged to go for short walks as soon as you feel able.
Are There Any Mommy Makeover Recovery Must-Haves?
A smooth recovery requires a little planning, including a list of essentials. At the top of the list are pre-made nutritious meals, a refillable water bottle, and a support system for childcare and housework. Preparing a "nest" where you can rest comfortably with pain medication, your smartphone, books, and anything else you'll want within arm's length can also ensure a seamless healing process. You'll need to wear a compression garment (think Spanx®) almost 24-7 for a few weeks to reduce swelling and promote healing.
