Do you want to try Botox but are worried about pain? If so, you're not alone. There are plenty of patients who fear pain and even needles. In order to better help patients and calm fears, Savannah Plastic Surgery is proud to debut the Pro-Nox Nitrous Oxide Delivery System. Nitrous oxide is an inhaled analgesic that helps to relieve the pain and anxiety a patient may experience during cosmetic procedures and other in-office procedures.

Plastic Surgery in Savannah, GA

Dr. Luke Curtsinger recently tried the Pro-Nox while getting Botox and fillers. He said he felt no pain during the injections. "This is patient-administered nitrous oxide where the patient breathes in the nitrous oxide from a tube," says Curtsinger. "It is a very safe and controlled delivery method. A patient can control when they need more and it takes effect in seconds."

When Can Pro-Nox Be Used?

Pro-Nox can be used during a number of procedures. Some of the main ones include:

  • Fillers
  • Laser treatments
  • Small surgical procedures

"Oftentimes barriers such as fear of pain, fear of needles and fear of general anesthesia for small procedures may prevent a patient from having something they want done or will cause a great amount of anxiety," says Curtsinger. "Pro-Nox will enhance our patient's experience and allow them to participate in the procedure while being relaxed."

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a clear, colorless vapor with a slightly sweet odor and taste. The mechanism of action of nitrous oxide is thought to be an increased release of endorphin, dopamine, and other natural pain relievers in the brain, which modulate pain stimuli via descending spinal cord nerve pathways. It is safe for patients and proven very effective.

While, nitrous oxide does not completely relieve the pain it creates "diminished pain, or a continued awareness of pain without feeling bothered by it." It also has an anti-anxiety effect, which may be helpful if the patient is restless and doubts his or her ability to cope, emotions that are not uncommon, especially during medical procedures. The potential side effects are very minimal and include nausea and dizziness.
