There is a new procedure helping some women have successful breast reconstruction after mastectomies. When a breast cancer survivor has a mastectomy and radiation, sometimes the remaining breast tissue will become scarred and firm. This can make breast reconstruction difficult.
But a new fat grafting procedure is offering another solution. During the procedure, the patient's own fat is taken from another area of the body and injected into the breast to add volume and shape. Sometimes, the injected fat can make the breast tissue soft enough so that implants can also be added later.
