For some people, having large or protruding ears can become a source of anxiety. Fortunately, a procedure can improve the shape, position or proportion of your ears.

“You’ll grow into your ears when you get older.”

A lot of kids who are born with large or protruding ears hear this during their childhood. But for many of them, growth doesn’t actually bring their ears into better proportion with the rest of their features. Fortunately, there is a procedure called otoplasty, or “ear pinning surgery” that can improve the shape, position or proportion of your ears.

Otoplasty can treat overly large ears as well as ears that “stick out” or protrude on one or both sides of the head. Children can usually be considered for the surgery if they are at least 5 years old, generally healthy, cooperative and able to follow instructions. Healthy teens and adults may also be good candidates.

Ear surgery isn’t for everyone, and you should discuss your unique situation with a physician. He or she will help you understand the surgery, the expected outcome, and the recovery.
