Mommy Makeover in Savannah, GA

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

Most women find that their bodies change after pregnancy. Often this means:

  • Breast sag
  • Changes in breast size
  • Stretched or sagging abdominal skin
  • Diastasis recti (complete or partial separation of the abdominal muscles)
  • Extra pounds that are hard to lose

A mommy makeover is a body-contouring treatment that combines multiple plastic surgery techniques to address the effects of pregnancy and childbirth. Together, these procedures are designed to reverse these effects and restore your body’s youthful appearance.

It’s called a mommy makeover, but you don’t have to have been pregnant to benefit from the collection of procedures. Anyone who has experienced changes in their body due to aging or weight fluctuations may benefit from a mommy makeover.

If you’ve experienced any of these body changes and would like to reverse them, you might be a candidate for a mommy makeover. Depending on your treatment needs, we may recommend a combination of the following procedures for your mommy makeover:

What Happens in a Mommy Makeover?

A full mommy makeover may be made up of different procedures, but it generally has two main objectives:

  1. To trim and tighten the waist and abdomen, and
  2. To lift and reshape the breasts

Abdomen: Trimming and tightening the abdomen is usually achieved with a tummy tuck. In this procedure, the abdominal muscles are tightened if they’ve been weakened due to pregnancy or another cause. Then loose skin is removed from around the abdominal area. This trims the waistline, tightens your abdominal area, and flattens your tummy.

Breasts: Any excess skin is removed to lift and reshape the breasts, giving them a more youthful look and feel. This part of the procedure might also involve placing breast implants or performing a breast reduction, depending on your preferences.

Liposuction: Many women find it hard to lose excess weight after pregnancy. Liposuction can remove excess fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise, trimming the waist, hips, and thighs.

Are There Any Risks Involved in a Mommy Makeover?

Any surgical procedure has some associated risks and complications. To minimize your level of risk, choose an experienced plastic surgeon, and make sure to follow all their instructions when preparing for and recovering from surgery.

Surgical Risks

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Unwanted reaction to anesthesia

Post-Surgery Risks

  • Infection
  • Hematoma
  • Blood clot

Post-Surgery Complications

  • Incisions may become inflamed or irritated, or take longer than normal to heal.
  • Swelling may last longer than normal.
  • Infection may develop. If your surgeon prescribes antibiotics, make sure to take them as directed, to reduce your risk of infection.

When you work with a trained, experienced plastic surgeon, the chances of experiencing mommy makeover risks decreases drastically. Talk with one of our expert plastic surgeons if you have any questions or concerns.

What Happens During a Mommy Makeover Consultation?

An initial consultation is an important opportunity to talk with your surgeon about the procedure and your hopes for the results and to go over any questions you have. During your mommy makeover consultation, the first step is just talking with the surgeon about what you want from the procedure and what your surgical options are. For instance, maybe you think you need a tummy tuck, but after speaking with you and doing a brief exam, your surgeon believes liposuction is the right option.

Once they have the information they need, your surgeon can customize a treatment plan, tailored to help you achieve the body you desire.

Your surgeon will also ask you some questions about your health status, so they can make sure you’re a good candidate for the surgery. This may include questions about medications you’re taking and any health conditions you have.

Just as important, you’ll have the chance to ask questions about the procedures and the results you can expect. Make sure to bring up anything you’re concerned about or don’t understand. It’s important that you have all the information you need to make the right choice for you.

Mommy Makeover Surgery: Before, During, and After

Depending on your circumstances, your surgeon might give you some recommendations to prepare for your surgery. For instance, if you take medications such as blood thinners, you’ll be asked to stop taking them for a period of time prior to surgery. This is important because these medications can make surgery more risky. You’ll also be advised to stop smoking if you’re a smoker. This is important to ensure your body heals well after surgery.

On surgery day, you’ll have a quick meeting with your surgeon to go over the procedures you’re having. This is just to make sure you’re fully aware of what’s happening during surgery and what you can expect after you wake up.

Mommy makeover procedures are performed under a general anesthetic. A full makeover may take three to five hours, but your surgery time will depend on the specific procedures you’re having. In some cases, two surgery sessions might be needed to complete a mommy makeover. This is generally in cases where there are multiple surgical procedures to perform.

All mommy makeovers are performed in our surgicenter, a state-licensed ambulatory facility that is certified by the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). We make sure you’re safe and comfortable throughout the whole procedure. And, while some scarring may be unavoidable, our surgeons make every effort to make the fewest incisions possible to minimize scarring.

Like the treatment itself, mommy makeover recovery varies depending on the areas treated and the surgical techniques involved. Mommy makeover patients can usually return home the day of their procedure, but we recommend that you take at least one or two weeks off work and other activities. During this time, it is common to experience bruising, swelling, and varying discomfort in the treatment areas. It’s important to get as much rest as possible in the weeks after surgery. Additionally, you should avoid exercise, heavy lifting, and other strenuous activities for at least a month after your procedures.

What Results Can You Expect from a Mommy Makeover?

You won’t see the results of your surgery right away. After surgery you’ll have some swelling and fluid retention, so you won’t immediately see that flatter tummy or trimmer waistline. But over the weeks and months, as the swelling goes down and your body heals, the new you will be revealed.

The results of a mommy makeover are permanent, meaning that the effects of the surgery don’t wear off over time, like BOTOX does, for instance. But your body can still change in the future, if you become pregnant, or gain and lose weight, or just due to aging. For this reason, it’s usually better to have a mommy makeover after you’ve finished having children or after you’ve lost all the weight you want to lose.
