Lip Plumping: A Right and a Wrong Way

By The Team @ Savannah Plastic Surgery

By The Team @ Savannah Plastic Surgery

A warning to anyone hoping for an at-home technique to get plump, pouty lips - please leave lip plumping to the experts.
There's a new, self-destructive trend happening right now, inspired by the plump lips of reality TV star Kylie Jenner. People, many of them adolescent girls, are tying a do-it-yourself method with painful results. They'll hold a shot glass or small cup over their lips and inhale to create a great amount of suction. But rather than pretty and pouty lips, many of them are suffering from bruising and bleeding around the mouth.
We've seen some painful-looking pictures of this technique gone wrong, and you can see photos and read more about it at this news site.
Simply put, DIY lip plumping is a bad idea. For many women, something as simple as proper makeup application can give the appearance of full lips. The Skin Institute also sells a SkinMedica Lip Plumping system that stimulates circulation in the lips, safely enhancing fullness and color. For an even longer-lasting result, dermal fillers like Restylane can be used for fuller lips.
Here you can see the before-and-after photos of two of our patients who received Restylane for the lips and achieved an attractive, natural-looking result.
