Saline Implant Placement

Question: I'VE SEEN HORRIFIC PICTURES ON TV SHOW RECENTLY REGARDING IMPLANTS, ALTHOUGH MY IMPLANTS ARE GREAT (5 years now), I WENT FROM A A-B CUP TO A DD CUP, AND THEY WERE INSERTED UNDER THE MUSCLE, DO I EVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEM DROPPING DOWN REALLY FAR?

Answer: I wish I'd seen the same show you watched so I could be very specific, but I'll have to give you general principles. When the implant is under the muscle, it tends to stay up nicely on the chest wall. If the implant is over the muscle, it can stretch the breast tissues more and can droop easier, particularly if it is a heavy implant. While the implant does not droop much, the breast tissue can relax over time and actually droop over or off the implant. This is not a common occurence, but, if it is going to happen, it happens most often when there is a lot of breast tissue and if the skin has lost it's elasticity. It sounds as though you didn't have too terribly much of your own tissue to start with, so your chances of drooping are probably much less than average. I don't think it's necessary to revise breast surgery unless someone has a significant problem. Remember that what you see on TV has been chosen for it's shock value and is usually NOT the normal course for standard surgery. Unless you have problems I would not worry about what you see on TV.

Silicone Vs. Saline Implants

Question: I am interested in implants, but have heard that saline will need to be redone every 10 years or so, and that gel are the way to go. My friend had them done in Panama and they look fantastic! Very real, and very bouncy after 9 years. I see that gel implants can be used if you are part of a study... Do you offer them? I am a 37 year old Mom of two, in very good health, with what used be full C breasts. I am of normal weight, with realistic expectations. I am sure I would do a tummy tuck at the same time.

Answer: Yes, we use silicone as well as saline implants. We would need to examine you to see if you qualify for the study to use silicone. I would really like to explain in detail the pro's and con's of each implant style. I do a lot of breast augmentations and often at the same time as a tummytuck. Please call and come by for an appointment so I can give you all this information and evaluate your exact needs.

Breast Reconstruction or Lift

Question: I am currently 39 years old and have two children of which I breastfed both. My breasts are currently a B/C cup. My breasts are very saggy and almost look flat because of the stretched skin. I really don't want implants, can you recommend anything else? I had heard about inserting fat from the abdomen to make the breast firmer, is this correct?

Answer: The fat from the abdomen is a complex procedure for breast reconstruction after breast cancer. You sound like you need a much less complex procedure-a breast lift- where we reshape your breasts and get rid of the sag-using only your natural tissues. Call in and come by for a consult and I would be happy to explain it to you.

Ptosis of the Breasts

Question: I have been doing some research, and according to what I have found I have ptotic breasts. I guess what I am wondering what can I do non-surgically to help with this condition. Ever since my breasts developed they have been a little droopy, but since I have had my daughter they have gotten worse. I feel ugly and I hate my husband seeing me naked. I don't feel beautiful at all!

Answer: There is no treatment for ptosis of the breasts without surgery. In mild cases, the placement of breast implants can lift the breasts as well as provide more volume. For more moderate cases, especially if the patient is happy with the volume, we can do a breast lift. The severe cases require both a lift and may need an implant as well, depending on the desire for more volume.

Does a Breast Lift Change the Breast Size?

Question: I am 28 yrs olds, 164 lbs wearing a size 36C. My breast sags horribly and I am very embarassed by it. I am considering having them lifted. My question is does a breast lift change the size of your breast or does it simply elevate them at their current size.

Answer: That's really a terrific question. Lots of people feel their breasts look fuller because more of the volume is pushed to the superior pole (top) of the breast; however, the skin envelope actually is a bit smaller. If you are a full C right now, you would probably still be a C, but on the smaller side of a C, and might even be a large B cup in some brands of clothing. (Note that NO glandular tissue is taken away, but the loose skin is reduced.) A consult could tell you what you, personally, could expect from the surgery.

Breast Augmentation Consultations

Question: I was thinking of a breast augmentation. I know that my insurance does not cover plastic surgery, so can you please tell me how much a consultation usually runs and what i need when i go to my consultation.

Answer: The price for a consultation is 60.00 and there is nothing you need to bring with you when you come.
