If you search the internet for information about new technology in cosmetic procedures, you'll likely come across advertisements for injections using stem cells. Stem cell technology is certainly an exciting field in medicine right now, with many researchers investigating all the ways in which stem cells can be used to renew our bodies. But be wary of ads promoting their use in cosmetic procedures - there simply hasn't been enough research yet to know if some of these methods are safe.
Claims about positive results for facelifts, breast augmentations and other procedures may be unsubstantiated. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration has only approved one cosmetic stem cell procedure to treat facial wrinkles. And even since its approval, the product continues to be closely monitored.
Any other cosmetic stem cell procedures have not yet gained FDA approval, and therefore the risks remain unknown. We're hopeful that in the future, many more procedures may gain approval, but for now, use caution when considering any cosmetic stem cell procedures.
