Plastic Surgery Rates Increasing Among Older Americans

oldercouple.jpgPlastic surgery is becoming more popular among many age groups, and we're seeing a lot of older patients coming into our office, looking for plastic surgery. Whether seeking eyelid surgery, facial surgery, or something else, many patients tell us they want to look on the outside how they feel on the inside - which is youthful and energetic.

As people live longer, it's no surprise older Americans are seeking plastic surgery. Some folks have more financial freedom in their later years, making plastic surgery more financially feasible. For others, retirement is the perfect time for a procedure because work obligations no longer interfere.

A recent news report on WISH-TV confirms what we're seeing in our office too. Click here if you'd like to see the story.

If you are wondering if you're a good candidate for a plastic surgery procedure, we offer complementary consultations for cosmetic surgery. Just contact us online or call us at 912-31-5050 and we'll be happy to set up an appointment.

Thread Lift Vs. Face Lift

chin and face copy.jpgYou may have heard of a procedure gaining popularity as a non-surgical alternative to the face lift - it's called a "thread lift." In a thread lift, threads are sewn into a patient's facial skin, and then pulled to tighten the skin for a lifted, younger appearance. Patients are under local anesthetic, and downtime is minimal.

It sounds like a good plan at first, but the threads dissolve and results usually only last 6 months. So 180 days after your procedure, you're back to where you were before, and out of pocket a significant amount of money.

That's one reason we don't perform thread lifts at Savannah Plastic Surgery - we want you to be happy with your results in the long term. A face lift is cosmetic surgery, and patients are put under general anesthesia and need around 2 weeks to recover. But the results are long lasting. No one can completely stop time - your face will continue to age and you may want to repeat the procedure one or more times-perhaps five or ten years down the line. But in another sense, the effects of even one face lift are lasting; years later, you'll continue to look better than if you'd never had a face lift at all.

You can read more about the thread lift vs face lift debate here:

If you are looking for facial rejuvenation but aren't ready for a full face lift, you may also consider the FreshLook Lift. The FreshLook Lift is a less invasive facelift performed by our plastic surgeons as an outpatient with local anesthesia and mild sedation. This allows the patient to return home and resume daily activities sooner. The "down time" is reduced to a few days.

Or, if you just need a "quick fix," fillers and injectables like Botox, Dysport, Restylane and Juvederm are also viable alternatives to surgery.

If you have questions about which facial rejuvenation procedure is right for you, we'd love to bring you into the office for a consultation with one of our surgeons. Contact us today!

The Right Nose for Each Face

Nose reshaping surgery, called rhinoplasty, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the US. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 220,000 people had rhinoplasty in the US last year - an increase from the previous year.

But no two nose jobs are the same.

Some nose surgery is done to repair breathing problems, or because of a traumatic nose injury. Others are done for aesthetic purposes, or a combination of reasons. Each nose surgery should be custom designed to look as natural as possible, taking into account factors such as ethnicity, proportion with other facial features, nostril size, bridge width, and much more.

At Savannah Plastic Surgery, we've performed many rhinoplasty procedures, and on a variety of patient types. If you're considering nose shaping surgery, you may find it helpful to explore our rhinoplasty page where you'll find information about the procedure as well as a 3-D animated video about nose surgery. We offer complimentary consultations for cosmetic surgery, so contact us if you'd like to set up an appointment to discuss rhinoplasty. We'd be happy to answer your questions, and we recognize that your surgery will be as unique as you are!

Treating Puffy or Drooping Skin Around the Eyes

As we age, the skin around our eyes often changes, and sometimes in unwelcome ways. But there are treatments, both surgical and non-surgical, to help your eyes retain a more youthful appearance.

For some people, extra fat deposits in the lower eyelid cause what we call "bags" under the eyes, and give the eyes a puffy appearance. Puffiness can also occur in the upper eyelids, creating a tired look. A surgical procedure called blepharoplasty can be done to remove these fatty deposits around the eye.

Blepharoplasty is also done to remove excess skin in the natural fold of the upper lids, and excess skin and wrinkles around the lower lids. Sometimes this loose skin can hang down from the upper eyelids and even partially obstruct your vision.

There are non-surgical options for treating other eye issues. If you have too little fat under the eye creating a droopy-eyed look, you may benefit from dermal fillers like Restylane, Juvéderm and Perlane. If you have dark circles under your eyes caused by natural skin pigment or leaking blood vessels, a laser treatment from The Skin Institute may be your best option.

The sooner you begin to address the problem, generally the better your results. If you aren't happy with the skin around your eyes, contact us for a consultation.

A Testament of Transformation

We know that our work here at Savannah Plastic Surgery is about more than just medical procedures. Whether you come to us for cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, you also come with a story, and sometimes with hopes for a dramatic, life-changing transformation. And we sure do love hearing from our patients about how their lives are changed after surgery.

We recently received a wonderful testimonial from a patient of Dr. Barbara Davies, who had a facelift. "Fortunately for women today, we do not have to suffer self-esteem and depression over aging being irreversible," she writes. "Yesterday, for the first time in 3 years, I wore lipstick. Pink. And it looked beautiful, and I smiled as I cried."

Read her full testimonial below. And if you would like to share your plastic surgery experience with us, we'd love to hear from you. Visit our patient testimonials page, and let us know how cosmetic surgery has transformed your life.

Thank you Dr. Davies

I am a 54 year disciplined woman who has always strived to maintain body, mind and spirit. I exercise regularly, eat healthy (with a few exceptions), and face the world with a positive outlook. In the past several years, that outlook has been significantly challenged by the premature aging around the area of my mouth. My smiling became less, and I found myself constantly trying to find ways to conceal what I perceived to be embarrassing and distracting from my other physical features that I loved. I had a hard time even looking in a mirror without coming to tears.

Fortunately for women today, we do not have to suffer self-esteem and depression over aging being irreversible. We do have the option of taking control of our lives, and making changes we can embrace that make our quality of life all the more enriched.

I came to find Dr. Davies from several colleagues who had minor cosmetic work done by her hands. They looked so natural, with subtle changes that enhanced their youthfulness in an age-appropriate manner. After meeting with Dr. Davies, my confidence grew even more that I, too, could have that look.

My scheduled lifestyle face lift took place on an early Friday morning. The procedures was done, start to finish, by a competent, sensitive, and supportive surgical team. They kept me informed every step of the way, and patiently provided assistance pre and post surgery. Surgery can certainly be a fearful experience, and I have had that myself in younger years. Dr. Davies and her staff welcomed me into a clean and sterile surgical room, and by the time the procedure had been completed, I was just about waking up.

The first 24 hours certainly were "down-time." I was given discharge instructions for care, along with proper medical supplies. By the second day, I was already up on my feet and actively resuming some light dally living activities. Certainly, there is a period of adjustment where one uses common sense about eating soft foods, curtailing stressful activities, and maintaining proper hygiene to avoid infections. And yes, there is swelling, bruising, and a need to wear a facial head wrap for healing.

By the second day, I could visibly see the beauty of my skin changing, and all those imbedded lines and wrinkles disappeared. Somehow the bit of discomfort that always comes from surgery was so worth it, and so manageable, as I was witnessing my own return to youth. Every day became better and better. I felt so proud of my new appearance, that I even went back to work with my head wrap on and some bruising visible. I created such a sensation from coworkers who had known my looks before, and could not believe that such lines and creases could be removed.

I am now almost one month post-op. I am still wearing the head wrap, but bruising and swelling is fairly nonexistent. Yesterday, for the first time in 3 years, I wore lipstick. Pink. And it looked beautiful, and I smiled as I cried. I proudly went out to dinner with friends, where a gentleman there felt compelled to tell me how beautiful my smile, and ask me what happened due to the head wrap. I could not help but laugh and respond "beauty happened."

Thank you Dr. Davies for giving me back my self-esteem and confidence. You will never know how deeply appreciative I am of having had the fortune of our paths crossing.

Improve Your Vision with Eyelid Surgery

Eye strain. Headaches. Obstructed vision. These are just some of the issues you may encounter if you have sagging eyelids.

As we age, skin on our forehead and around our brows can loosen and begin to droop. Sometimes, the skin droops enough to partially cover your eyes and interfere with your vision. This is a problem that affects both men and women.

Thankfully, there is a fairly simple procedure that can be done to correct the issue and make it easier for you to see. With an eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, a plastic surgeon removes the excess skin from the eyelids. The procedure can sometimes be done using just local numbing medicine around the eyes. Eyelid surgery is often covered by health insurance as well.

With eyelid surgery, in addition to improved vision and relief from excess eye strain, you often get cosmetic benefits too. Many patients find that their eyes look brighter, giving them a younger, more rested appearance.

We can help you determine if blepharoplasty is right for you, and we can work with your insurance company to see if the procedure is covered under your current plan. Contact us today for more information.

FreshLook Lift™ vs. Face Lift

The FreshLook Lift™ is one of our most popular procedures right now, and it's not hard to see why. For decades, people have relied on the surgical face lift procedure to turn back the clock and take years off their appearance. But now, the FreshLook Lift™ is making it even easier, and more affordable than ever, to reclaim your youthful face.

Here are a few of the questions we often get from patients considering a facelift or the FreshLook Lift™.

1. What is the difference between the FreshLook Lift™ and a facelift? How do I know which one is right for me?

The biggest differences between a facelift and the FreshLook Lift™ are the recovery time and the level of sedation. The FreshLook Lift™ takes half the time of a facelift at half the cost, and still gives you great results. The procedure time is from 2-4 hours, and then you're sent home with a facial garment instead of the drains you need with a traditional facelift.

2. Will I be asleep during the procedure?

The FreshLook Lift™ does not require IV sedation. Instead you're given an "oral cocktail" of medications before surgery to help you relax during the procedure.

3. How much recovery time is needed?

With a FreshLook Lift™, you are able to resume most of your normal activities in two or three days, although some patients may take a little longer to recover. You will need to wear a facial garment during recovery. Your specific post-operative care and recovery experience will depend on your lifestyle and what your surgeon recommends.

4. How long will the results last?

The FreshLook Lift™ will take years off your appearance, but as with any other procedure, the aging process does not end. However, with appropriate skin care and a good diet and exercise routine, the results should last for several years.

5. Does the FreshLook Lift™ help remove wrinkles?

The FreshLook Lift™ gives the skin a more youthful, smoother look, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will look better than ever, and if you care for your skin with a good skin care protocol, you will look and feel fabulous for years to come!
