Faith in Practice: Dr. Vann and Dr. Davies in Guatemala

This week, you won't find Dr. Scott Vann or Dr. Barbara Davies greeting patients in our Savannah offices. But they're not on vacation - they're performing life-altering reconstructive surgeries for people who could not otherwise receive this critical care.

Dr. Vann and Dr. Davies are in Guatemala, serving with "Faith in Practice," a group that brings physicians into impoverished areas to perform needed surgeries and medical care. The Faith in Practice website has a blog with frequent updates on patients - you hear a bit of their life stories, and how those lives are changed after contact with doctors like Dr. Vann and Dr. Davies.

The blog includes stories about people like 9-year-old Ily, who suffered severe burns and needed reconstructive surgery. The blog author writes, "Ily is a brave young girl of only 9 years old. I am not sure that I have seen this much courage in anyone before today. She appears to be very happy even after suffering so  much pain."

You can read more stories like this online at We are very proud of Dr. Vann, Dr. Davies and Dr. Deloach who dedicate their time and talents each year on a journey to Guatemala.  We wish them safe travels and a safe return.

Sharing Their Gifts

All of our surgeons have amazing talents and great gifts, and this week several of them are sharing their gifts with deserving patients in Guatemala. Right now, Dr. Barbara Davies and Dr. Dan Deloach are in Guatemala as part of a team of doctors with Faith in Practice. They are performing reconstructive procedures for the local people who could not otherwise afford treatment. They're repairing cleft lips and palates. They're repairing faces that had been scarred in accidents. They're making a real difference in the lives of these people.

On this visit, they've been joined by a non-medical team member who is writing about their trip on the Faith in Practice website. The stories are heart-warming and beautiful, and you can read them all by visiting the blog for this trip. There is a wonderful story about the reunion of Dr. Deloach and a young man whose face was disfigured in a terrible motorcycle accident. Dr. Deloach operated on the young man a year ago, and was able to see the fruits of that labor on this trip.

"Dr. Dan and Adonis' reunion is wonderful to see. There is so much more here than a happy patient and good doctor," says team member Cindy McWilliams on the blog. "The two beam at each other while Dan examines the result of God's work through his hands, and he is pleased."

Dr. Scott Vann is also traveling to Guatemala this week with a second team of doctors for Faith in Practice. He'll perform reconstructive surgeries, and will also visit with the children of the Christ Child's Nest. You can read about his last trip to Guatemala here.

We are so proud of our physicians - proud of what they accomplish here in Savannah, and proud of the unselfish way they share their gifts in other parts of the world as well!

Dr. Vann Helps Children in Guatemala

If you are a child born with a physical defect, and you live in a developing country, there are fewer options for medical help than we enjoy here in the United States. That's why Dr. Scott Vann feels called to use his reconstructive surgery skills to help the people of Antigua, Guatemala.

Dr. Vann recently returned from a trip to Guatemala, visiting with former patients and assessing the needs of children at Christ Child's Nest, a children's home with about 100 children. Dr. Vann's church, Isle of Hope Methodist, provides financial support for the home, and sends members like Dr. Vann to visit with the children and workers and see how best to help.

While in Guatemala, Dr. Vann also visited a wheelchair factory supported by his church. The factory is run by a group called Transitions, which works to help the physically disabled in Guatemala and employs many physically challenged young people.

Dr. Vann will return to Guatemala in February to perform needed surgeries and procedures for the people there. In the meantime, Dr. Vann will help his church continue to raise funds to sponsor the children of the Christ Child's Nest.
