Male Plastic Surgery is On the Rise

man-mirror.jpgWhen you imagine the typical plastic surgery patient, you probably think of a woman. That's because historically, the majority of patients seeking cosmetic procedures have been female.

But trends are shifting, and more men are also now seeking plastic surgery. This article in Allure says the taboo against male plastic surgery is fading, and we see this reflected in an increased number of men coming to us seeking aesthetic changes.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, from 1997 to 2015, the number of men having plastic surgery has tripled.

Some of the more popular procedures among our male patients include liposuction, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, facelift and male breast reduction.

Non-surgical procedures like Botox are also gaining popularity among men.

If you're considering plastic surgery - male or female - we offer complimentary consultations with any of our 6 surgeons. You can use our online contact form, or call us at 912-351-5050 to schedule an appointment.

The Daddy Do-Over

We parents lead busy lives, constantly trying to balance the demands of work, home, friends and family. For some of us, self care is the first thing to be ignored. We don't take the time to exercise or cook healthy meals like we used to, and as middle age creeps up on us, our bodies lose fitness.

The Mommy Makeover has been a popular set of procedures for years, but middle-age challenges aren't just for moms. We're also getting a lot of requests for the "Daddy Do-Over."

DadatDesk.jpgSimilar to the Mommy Makeover, the Daddy Do-Over is a unique set of procedures combined to bring back a more fit, youthful appearance. Multiple procedures are combined into a single surgery. Some of the most common Daddy Do-Over procedures include eyelid surgery and liposuction of the waist, "love handles," and chest area.

Liposuction is great for permanently removing fat from the waist, love handles and chest, which are common problem areas in middle-aged men. Liposuction is a good choice for a slimmer, leaner phsyique.

Eyelid surgery eliminates a chronic, tired look by removing excess skin and fat from the lids. Rather than drooping, your eyes look bright and alert after eyelid surgery.

Not everyone is willing to commit to the recovery time required for cosmetic surgery, which is why non-surgical options are also popular among both men and women. CoolSculpting is an innovative way to remove fat through targeted cooling, and requires no downtime or surgery, making it a great option for on-the-go dads.

Plastic Surgery for Men

Cosmetic surgery isn't just a girl thing. Men care about appearances too, and more of them are using plastic surgery to improve the way they look.
A study done by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery showed that 10% of plastic surgery procedures in 2011 were performed on men, which is an increase of 121% in the last 15 years.
The most popular procedures for men are liposuction, breast reduction and facial surgery, such as eyelid surgery, a facelift, or nose surgery.
Increases are also being seen in the use of skincare products by men, who accounted for 47% of health and body products used in 2011.

Improve Your Vision with Eyelid Surgery

Eye strain. Headaches. Obstructed vision. These are just some of the issues you may encounter if you have sagging eyelids.

As we age, skin on our forehead and around our brows can loosen and begin to droop. Sometimes, the skin droops enough to partially cover your eyes and interfere with your vision. This is a problem that affects both men and women.

Thankfully, there is a fairly simple procedure that can be done to correct the issue and make it easier for you to see. With an eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, a plastic surgeon removes the excess skin from the eyelids. The procedure can sometimes be done using just local numbing medicine around the eyes. Eyelid surgery is often covered by health insurance as well.

With eyelid surgery, in addition to improved vision and relief from excess eye strain, you often get cosmetic benefits too. Many patients find that their eyes look brighter, giving them a younger, more rested appearance.

We can help you determine if blepharoplasty is right for you, and we can work with your insurance company to see if the procedure is covered under your current plan. Contact us today for more information.

Male Breast Reduction

Breast surgery isn't just for women - quite often we physicians receive questions from men with over-developed or enlarged breasts. The condition, called gynecomastia, is very common, and can occur in men of any age. Causes can range from obesity and weight issues, to hormonal changes, heredity, disease or the use of certain medications.

Gynecomastia can be more than just a physical problem - it can cause emotional discomfort and will make most adolescent and adult men very self-conscious. Some men will go to great lengths to avoid certain physical activities (the gym, the beach, the pool or even intimacy) to hide their condition.

The good news is, guys don't have to live with enlarged breasts. We can help.

Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure to correct gynecomastia, and usually involves liposuction and very small incisions. Depending on the amount of reduction needed, the procedure can sometimes be performed under local anesthesia with minimum down-time. The result is a better proportioned, more masculine upper-body contour, and the freedom and self-confidence to lead an active life.

If you're interested in learning more about correction of gynecomastia, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. In a consultation, the physician can learn more about your individual situation, your goals and what options may be available to correct your gynecomastia. You'll also get answers to your questions about male breast reduction, and be better able to make informed decisions about improving your body.
