Breast Surgery After A Mastectomy

|

reconstructivesurgery.gifWe recently wrapped up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we are all reminded about the importance of breast cancer screening. But for some, when screening leads to a cancer diagnosis, it's just the first step in a long process toward regaining health and preserving life.

As plastic surgeons, we often join a patient's journey after breast cancer has been diagnosed and has resulted in a mastectomy, or surgery to remove the breast. Many women choose to have reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy in order to rebuild a realistic looking breast. Sometimes implants are used, and other times the patient's own tissues can be relocated to form the new breast.

If you have had, or will have a mastectomy, it's important to talk with your doctor about post-surgery options, and whether or not breast reconstruction is right for you. Information and resources can also be found on the American Cancer Society's website, or by meeting with one of our physicians to discuss your care.

Post-Mastectomy Reconstruction Options for Older Patients

|

breastcancer-450.jpgNew research indicates that older women who have a mastectomy after breast cancer treatment may be good candidates for a breast reconstruction procedure using the woman's own tissue to rebuild the breast. For years, many patients and doctors assumed that after a certain age, breast reconstruction became a riskier procedure. But researchers in a new US study found that women over 60 are reporting high satisfaction in categories of sexual, psychosocial and physical wellbeing after this type of reconstruction procedure.

According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly a quarter of a million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and the median age of diagnosis is now 62. Survival rates are improving and women are living longer after breast cancer treatment, which makes it important to have several breast reconstruction options available to patients of all ages.

You can read more about the study in this article on Reuters.com.

If you have had a mastectomy or are currently undergoing breast cancer treatment, we'd love to meet with you and talk about your post-operative restoration. We can help you understand all of your options, the risks and benefits, no matter your age or situation. Contact us today to set up a consultation.

New Procedure for Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy

|

There is a new procedure helping some women have successful breast reconstruction after mastectomies. When a breast cancer survivor has a mastectomy and radiation, sometimes the remaining breast tissue will become scarred and firm. This can make breast reconstruction difficult.

But a new fat grafting procedure is offering another solution. During the procedure, the patient's own fat is taken from another area of the body and injected into the breast to add volume and shape. Sometimes, the injected fat can make the breast tissue soft enough so that implants can also be added later.

If you've had a mastectomy and are interested in breast reconstruction, make an appointment to speak with one of our 7 surgeons about your options. We can work with you to determine which procedure might be best for your unique situation.
